    Alton Brown!
Alton Brown was in Midland last night. As entertaining as Good Eats is, he's much funnier in person. If you have the opportunity to see him live, take it. If you have children, take them with you. After a roughly hour-and-a-half show, he spent over an hour answering audience questions and only stopped when the event organizer asked him to wrap things up. More than half of the questions were from young kids and he made each one feel that they asked an important and interesting question and the answers were equally entertaining to the rest of the audience.

Apparently, I can't help but believe in God whether I admit it or not. The Bible says so.

    Scriptures

I'm a sucker for Bible software. I have almost as many different kinds of Bible software as I have printed Bibles. In case there's anyone else out there with the same disease, the Mormons sell an interesting one for only $6 including shipping.

It includes the Book of Mormon (of course), but also includes the Doctrine and Covenants, King James version of the Bible (the only one that the Mormons like), Hebrew Old Testament and Greek New Testament.

For those who have an interest in either Mormon scriptures or the Bible in the original languages, it's actually a pretty good deal. In order to get decent electronic copies of the Hebrew or Greek Bible, you're usually talking about $80 or $100. The LDS software has actually become one of my favorites, right along with the Zondervan NIV software that I got free in a box of Cheerios years ago.

While you're at it, you can get yourself a paper copy of what the Mormons call a "triple", which includes the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price. It's only $5.

    LEGO!

I was hanging out at the dollar store and found the remains of the LEGO rapist NBA collection.

Kobe was just too adorable to pass up.

I was listening to the archives of the QuackCast and heard a fantastic line that I want to remember:

The plural of "anecdote" is "anecdotes", not "data".

    Again with the aliens...

Once again, Creation on the Web is going on about the aliens, but this is even weirder than before. The train of logic in the article amounts to diagnosable mental illness.

Crab lice and our species-liberal ancestors.

If, like me, you have a rather nerdy sense of humor, you need to read this paper published yesterday in BMC Biology.

    Aliens! With your Big Mac!

Today's Creation on the Web article is about the dangers of a toy packaged with a Happy Meal. It plays a short clip from a German song about aliens. I was trying to figure out how this could be construed as anticreationist when I hit this line:

It seems amazing that a major multinational corporation sees no problem in promoting such ideas to very young children. But we shouldn’t be surprised. As we’ve demonstrated time and again, beliefs in aliens and UFOs have become mainstream. Despite no physical proof of intelligent extraterrestrials the idea that ‘there must be something else out there’ is a virtual fact for most. (bold added)
They're selling to the same market segment and upset about the competition! Replace the words "intelligent extraterrestrials" with "gods" and give away a toy that hums a few bars of "Jesus Loves Me" and you've got Sunday School.

    Mormons!

A Christian friend recently mentioned to me that he was intending to try proselytizing some Mormons. Since I generally know the details of the differences between various religous groups, he asked me for some pointers.

Today's Answers in Genesis article is an attempt to dismiss the idea that birds evolved from dinosaurs.

    Terrorists!

It appears that only U.S. citizens have legal recourse against the U.S. government.

"The arguments are creative but not cogent. To accept them would be to defy the will of Congress," wrote Judge A. Raymond Randolph in the 25-page opinion, which was joined by Judge David B. Sentelle. Both are Republican appointees to the federal bench.

I thought the whole reason that the courts were separate from Congress was so that when the "will of Congress" violates the Constitution, the courts can declare a law unconstitutional.

Rep. Ike Skelton, D-Mo., who chairs the House Armed Services Committee, said he is concerned about whether military hearings offer detainees the legal protections and will launch a congressional review.

"The last thing that we would want is to convict an individual for terrorism and then have that conviction overturned because of fatal flaws in the Military Commissions law passed in the previous Congress," he said.

No. The last thing that we would want is to allow our government to detain anybody without due process rights. As far as I was aware, military tribunals only constitute "due process" for active military personnel.

The text of the Jewish conspiracy memo

The memo accusing scientists of being Pharisees has been transcribed here (page down a few times to get past the commentary).

Would it surprise you to know that Republican state reps from Texas and Georgia think that evolution is a Jewish conspiracy?

    Podcast!

I almost forgot. I just found out that Institute for Creation Research has a radio show and that they archive their shows as podcasts. If you're a glutton for punishment like I apparently am, have a listen.

    The latest podcast description:

Many are caught in the grasp of the evolutionary worldview. However the power of God can break any fetter, and there is hope for everyone. During this program, you will meet three Ph.D.’s who have been freed from these bonds! Listen in as we hear how these devoted evolutionists turned to the truth of creation and to the God of the Bible.
Man, it's a good thing that I don't have a PhD to fetter me.

Update: I just listened to this one about Noah's Flood. Not only was there a global flood on Earth, but God also flooded Mars and Venus at the same time for good measure. Really! That's enough for now, so I changed up to Penn's latest radio show to rest my brain.

    Chimps Using Tools

Science NOW has a news article up today about chimpanzees using tools. The interesting thing about this one is that they found a set of tools in an area that is thought to have been devoid of humans at the time that the tools were made, about 4300 years ago*.

The reason that this is big news to anthropologists is that tool use was first thought to be the exclusive province of humans. Though tool use has subsequently been observed in both chimpanzees and gorillas, some argued that the tool use was learned (or "mimicked") from humans. The paper discussed in the article (which wasn't online at PNAS yet when I looked) offers solid evidence that the tools originated with the chimpanzees themselves.

In fact, there are those that have argued that the genera Pan (chimpanzee) and Gorilla should be merged with the genus Homo. That has so far been a minority view, but I'm sure this will add more fuel to the discussion.

    Marketing the Creation

I spent most of my Sunday listening to Bodie Hodge from Answers in Genesis. The seminar wasn't exactly what I was expecting, though I now understand a little more of Answers in Genesis' marketing strategy.

And yet, I don't believe. But then again, I'd argue that's why I don't believe.

Plus, I'm not sure knowing that Nehemiah follows Ezra makes me "awesome".

    You know the Bible 100%!

Wow! You are awesome! You are a true Biblical scholar, not just a hearer but a personal reader! The books, the characters, the events, the verses - you know it all! You are fantastic!
